Mental Healthiness and Sadguru Consultant
We are all afflicted by mental diseases and suffering from the multi faceted disease of mind, i.e. lust, anger, greed, temptation, hate, envy. These all persuade our actions. Tulsidas Ji says- हें सबके लखि विरलन्ही पाये I Each and every being is suffering from these mental afflictions but very few extraordinary beings are there to analyse their own faults. Only a few examine over it- what are the shortcomings I am having? How can I rectify my shortcomings? The person, suffering from mental afflictions, never admits the fact of being a sick, it is the irony of mental affliction. This problem is not with the physical diseased. He knows that he is suffering from the particular disease. When we suffer from any physical disease, the symptoms make us aware of it. And knowing the disease, we immediately think of mitigating or alleviating it accordingly. Since, diseases deteriorate the physical health which is visible to our eyes, we remain alert not to conduce any disease. But mental disease is totally different thing. It is not visible to human eyes, and hence its detection and further mitigation seems challenging. When we don’t perceive our self as unhealthy, then how we will think about its eradication? Another inherent symptom of this disease is- we easily identify these faults in others. Not only this, we even try hard every moment to correct others faults. Finding faults in others rather than in us, has been our innate nature. But, is there any doctor who can diagnose, convince us to be ill and take corrective measures to cure? Yes!!…He is our Guru, our spiritual master. Sadguru’s closeness or company is inevitable for healing our mental health. Whenever doctor meets a patient, he inquires the patients to know the actual reason of illness. If a doctor does not investigate the illness, how will he be able to prescribe correct medication? A good doctor is one who gathers information from the patient and provide insights about the illness. Likewise, ‘Sadguru’ makes us acquainted with our mental illness and faults. But the moot point is! we have to strongly consider whatever he says as in case of doctor. ‘सद्गुरु बेद बचन विश्वासा’. If we don’t accept what Guru says due to our pride and ego, then we will never succeed in getting well ourselves. We have to have 100% faith on whatever he says with no ‘ifs and buts’, only then it will be effective! Now, Guru will give you medication and i.e. ‘रघुपति भगति सजीवनि मूरी’ which means- do bhakti of Hari. Then Tulsidas Ji says ‘अनूपान श्रद्धा अति पूरी I’ i.e. bhakti should be done along with firm faith. For instance, when we take ayurvedic medicines, it is advised to take the medicines by mixing it in honey or with the ginger juice. It is अनूपान (anupan), likewise we have to do bhakti of our Lord with firm faith. But Shri Maharaj ji explains that ‘everyone will not have strong faith! Even if you don’t have faith then also come along.’ Where should we go? To Satsang. Satsang means companionship (संग) of saint or Guru (सत् or संत). Guru is divine personality whose simple glance can incite faith is us. Then His words will guide us through and we will be enchanted by his effulgence as- ‘गुंरौतिं इति गुरु:’ Guru has such luminance that he graces anyone who follows Him by eradicating the deep seated ignorance and illuminating our hearts with complete knowledge. Sun lightens and radiates every nook and corner of the universe but it depends upon our position to embrace brightness or darkness by facing towards or away, in the same way Guru is always there to enlighten, we just have to reach Him for the enlightenment.
